Band Gap recently applied for Virginia’s Small, Women-owned, and Minority-owned (SWaM) business certification, marking a natural milestone of corporate maturity for the company. For just over a year, Band Gap’s focus has been centered on intentional growth, building its team, and serving its first clients with a measured, thoughtful approach to launching a startup. As a Virginia Public Benefit Corporation with a core mission to use technology for good, obtaining this certification is a key step toward securing a seat at the table to help drive meaningful change within the Virginia economy.
The rigorous verification process served as an excellent operational stress test for a growing organization. To meet the Commonwealth’s thorough standards, Band Gap compiled its corporate governance records and traced its initial funding, proving that its internal house is in perfect order for larger operations. This administrative deep dive also provided a welcome trip down memory lane, prompting the team to look back at its very first days together through early paperwork, including initial legal incorporation fees and first business licenses.
As a team that designs and builds software systems, Band Gap’s staff appreciated the efficiency of the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity’s online portal. The platform’s easy navigation and progress-saving capabilities transformed a tedious administrative task into an incredibly manageable workflow. The final upload and submission brought a collective sense of equal parts relief and excitement to the team, while reinforcing the company’s foundational philosophy on optimization: the core purpose of designing smarter technology is not just to make systems faster, but to give people their time back to spend with friends, family, and their communities.
Reflecting on the milestone, the Band Gap’s COO, Cathleen Titcomb, stated:
“Our application is officially in, and our organizational foundation is rock-solid. We look forward to partnering with the Commonwealth to turn complex, data-heavy challenges into seamless solutions that benefit all Virginians.”
