San Jose, CA — On October 19th, Band Gap CEO and Principal Applied Scientist Dr. Jay Jay Billings attended the US RSE 2026 Conference to connect with the rapidly expanding Research Software Engineering (RSE) community and showcase Band Gap’s latest field technology.

During the event, Dr. Billings presented his talk, “Building Modern Tools for Computational Science in Flutter to Track the American Chestnut.” The presentation highlighted how Band Gap is leveraging modern, cross-platform frameworks to build robust ecological tracking tools for the scientific community.

Reflecting on the conference and the opportunity to catch up with old friends and collaborators, Dr. Billings noted the incredible momentum within the field:

“I was blown away by how much the RSE community has grown! It was especially impressive to see graduate students who were preparing for careers as RSEs. This means that the future is bright for a field that will only become more important as the scientific problems become more complicated.”

The Growing Need for RSEs

As a provider of specialized Research Software Engineering services, Band Gap recognizes that the challenges RSEs solve are being exacerbated by the rapid proliferation of Large Language Models (LLMs) and advanced AI tools. As computational science grows more complex, the demand for professionals equipped with dedicated RSE skill sets will only continue to rise.

The conference featured a wide array of fascinating research and innovative approaches to these modern challenges. Highlighting the diversity of the presentations, Dr. Billings shared, “I especially enjoyed Kevin Bhimani’s talk on creating a rule-based physics pipeline for poisonous books.”
